LATER THAT EVENING
i was in the guest room (aunty’s house)
listening to Luther Vandros ‘dance with my father again’
but in this case i wish the chorus could be change to ‘dance with my mother again’
befor now, anytime i listen to that song
it makes me love my mother more for taking the responsibility of two people(parents) on herself alon
i was still listening to the song when loveth came in
i didn’t notice her presence untill she called my name
though she smile at me but i saw pain behind that smile
“loveth, why did you force
that smile out when you are
not happy)
she instantly look muddy
“chuks, i know aunty must
have explain to you but i’m
sorry i did that”
i wanted to ask her what did she do
but i calm myself and allowed her to continue
“when i heard of the case
i knew if we should allow it
go through court
there is no chance of you
comin out of it”
i re-adjusted myself on the bed and i wanted to ask how did she know i wont come out from it befor she interrupted
“please don’t ask me how do
i know
me working as a maid here
does not make me an illiterate
i was a student and i know
where the case will end
a case of robbery and
murderer will not end well for
an innocent soul that have no
evidence to prove his case”
loveth has never sounded the way she did that evening

she said in a pitiful tone
i stood from the bed and move close to her
i held her shoulders losely making her to stand straight

“yes, supernatural does
but if she haven’t told you
anything then please let us
leave it till tomorrow”
she said
IN THE MORNING
i made an early call to my sister at ibadan to know what the situation is
i ended the call after getting the information that i needed
i entered bathroom to wash myself
as the water from the shawer drop on my head
the pain in my mind washed away
but another thing spring up in my mind
“am i going to office to
resume or to find out why i
was abandoned?”
i thought while still taking my bath
i dressed up for work since i have concluded to resume my job
life must continue
on my way out i met my aunty walking towards my room
she asked if i’m really ready to to resume my work which i answered her ‘yes’
“well if you say so, i will like
to have some words with but
lets leave it till you come
take care”
she entered kitchen after saying what she said
i saw mr john (aunty’s driver) out side and i formaly thank him for driving my vehicle home(aunty’s house) from the station
he offer to drive me but i stop him
i took a cab from the street
to office
i told the cab driver to park at the front of my company’s gate
i paid him his fee then came down
all the security at the gate saluted me at once like a general of army that just walk in
it seems they were happy for seeing me again
i took my time in greeting them than the way i normally do
when i entered the reception it was as if i was a TV screen that everybody face during a crucial football match
i nearly stumble with that look
“good morning”
i greeted them first
something i have never done
i manager to find my way out of that reception befor i end up messing myself
“jesus is good”
Onyi said softly while she covered her mouth with hand when she saw me
the expression on her face shows that she has head something
“mr mr hmm welcome sir”
she manage to say
“is she confuse on what to say or there is something else”
i thought
i returned the greeting then walk pass her into my office
i settled on my chair
for some minutes i remain on that chair thinking on the next move or thing do
i brought out my laptop and get it connected
Onyi walk in then stair at me for awhile
she delivered the message from chairman that any day i resume
i must report to his office
“hope there is no problem”
i asked
she let me know that she wouldn’t know if there any
i thank her for the message
and also told her to find out if chairman is on sit
i have to face whatever that is coming my way
at least ‘na go home e go end”
i prepared my mind for anything that might like to come my way
that is life
2 HOURS LATER
i was invited into an emergency board meeting
different questions were put up to me concerning the case i had
i told them what i can
after everything a panel of three men were raise to investigate the issue because they will not allow anything or anybody to damage the reputation of the company
my heart skiped when i hear the chairman saying
“you are suspend from your
duty till we hear the out come
of the investigation”
he said without lookin at me
this is life
i said within me
i was too ashame to walk out while people are still sitting
so i bow my head
i waited till they all left one after other
but when i raise it
chairman was stil sitting on his chair
remaining only two of us there
i wanted to beg him to reverse the decision but i decided to remain a man that i am
i stood then head straight to the door
i was at the door when i hear
“thank your God that this
happene to you
otherwise my sword would
have touch your life
i’m still watching”
he said
i went back to my office
thinking on what to do next
i was there for three hours still thinking on what to do
i picked up my desk phone and put a call through to onyi to report to my office
without wasting time she came in
‘sir you need my assistant?’
she asked
that is a useless question
if you are not needed here i wouldn’t have called you
i said in my mind
”please do you remember
M and E company?’
i asked her
she noded to answer ‘yes’
i told her to get me they file from her desk
the stone i rejected then must now be the chief stone that my foundation will stand on
i can boldly see the writing on the wall that my service is no longer needed
so if i can’t make use of this tiny and last opportunity here
it means i will remain a loser for life
Onyi came in with the file
‘here is the file sir’
she said while she droped it on my desk
‘when last did you work
on this file?’
‘sir you do not tell me to
work on it’
she really look scared
thank God you have not work on it
i said withing
i was about telling her to leave when she said
‘hope no problem sir’
‘no problem my dear, you
can leave now’
i said
she left without saying what is on her mind
her look shows that she wish to ask many question
i know i made mistake for sleeping with a married woman
but i shoud not be the only one to pay for it if God truely exist
at least she agree with me befor i or we did it
i said all this in my mind
i let a soft smile out and i said to myself
‘chuks… Hope you can
handle this’
i park little things that belong to me including the file
i looked at the office round for the last time then i walk out

i was deeply in thought when i got home
i meet my aunty in the conpound, about to enter her car
inicially i did’t see her
not untill she called me
‘what is the matter with
you?
you look unhappy’
she show concern
i promised to explain everything to her if she comes back
nobody in the living room when i entered and i was too tired to go into my room and bath
i sat on one of the center chairs in the sitting and relax myself there
i head loveth voice from far
meaning i must have slept off
i wiped my face with the left hand to see clearly
i saw loveth standing before me
‘i don’t know when i slept
off’
i said
‘yea i can see you are tired
and unsettled as well’
how come people easily notice if i’m worried?
I thought
she asked if i have eating anything which i told her i’m not interested in eating anything
she gave me unhappy look then she walks away
‘loveth…… Please come’
reluctantly she came back
i beged her to sit and she did
‘i don’t want to hide
anything from you any
more’
she look relaxed when listening to me
i open up to her
i told her everything that have been going on between myself and funmi
i told her about the short note i saw at my door
i also told her about what happened in office earler that day
and my intention with the file i came home with
